The following tips will not only save time and effort—they may even help you find joy (seriously!) in the dish-washing process.
- Think about the Zen-like feeling that comes with everything being orderly and completing a task.
- Get in the zone—whether that means listening to a favorite playlist or podcast, mentally preparing for an upcoming project, even meditating.
- Make washing dishes a multi-sensory experience—smell (soothing lavender), sight (towel options add a pop of color), even touch (soft, smooth hands).
- Feel good knowing you’re reducing your carbon footprint. Biobased products replace around 300 million gallons of petroleum per year in the United States—the equivalent of taking 200,000 cars off the road, according to the USDA.
- Clean up as you go. In an ideal scenario, everything you’ve used to cook—cutting boards, utensils, measuring cups, pots and pans—will be washed and put away before the meal is served. Then, for example, when it’s time to do dishes, you’re starting with a clear sink and dish rack.
- Have an action plan. Wash in order, starting with the least-soiled items. Leave anything greasy, gloppy or caked-on for last (they can soak in the meantime). Also know what needs to be hand-washed—delicate crystal and glassware, hand-painted or antique china, intricately decorated pieces, pewter, wood, cast iron cookware and chef’s knives, for example.
